Injury to the posterolateral corner of the knee: emergency department assessment and management.

چکیده
Registered advanced nurse practitioners (RANPs) are recognised as senior decision makers within the emergency department team (ED). The RANP employs a range of skills such as comprehensive health history, advanced physical examination, problem solving, clinical decision-making, and expert judgment to formulate diagnoses andmanagement plans for their patient’s health care needs (Gibbons, 2013). Nurses working in Advanced Practice roles are an increasingly vital component of the multidisciplinary approach to care delivery within the Irish emergency care setting (HSE, 2013a). RANPs are recognised as a senior clinical decision maker within the emergency department team (HSE, 2013b). RANPs are increasingly extending and expanding their scope of practice beyond their initial competencies (Lowe, 2010), and must therefore be aware of emerging trends in injury presentations. To ensure optimal patient care many of these patient care episodes are managed collaboratively with other health care professionals (NCNM, 2008).

Posterolateral Corner of the Knee:Current Concepts
Injuries to the posterolateral corner (PLC) comprise a significant portion of knee ligament injuries. A high index of suspicion is necessary when evaluating the injured knee to detect these sometimes occult injuries. Moreover, a thorough physical examination and a comprehensive review of radiographic studies are necessary to identify these injuries. In this sense, stress radiographs can ...
متن کاملSurgical Management of the Multiple-Ligament Knee Injury
The management of multiligament knee injury is a complex process starting with the adequate identification of the injury. A detailed physical and radiographic examination with a thorough understanding of knee anatomy is crucial to assess all damaged structures: anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, posteromedial corner including the medial collateral ligament, and posterolate...
متن کاملAnatomic Posterolateral Corner Reconstruction.
Posterolateral corner injuries represent a complex injury pattern, with damage to important coronal and rotatory stabilizers of the knee. These lesions commonly occur in association with other ligament injuries, making decisions regarding treatment challenging. Grade III posterolateral corner injuries result in significant instability and have poor outcomes when treated nonoperatively. As a res...

SYNOPSIS Injuries to the posterolateral corner of the knee pose a significant challenge to sports medicine team members due to their complex nature. Identifying posterolateral corner injuries is paramount to determining proper surgical management of the injured athlete, with the goal of preventing chronic pain, instability, and/or surgical failure. Postoperative rehabilitation is based on the s...
متن کاملPosterolateral Corner Knee Injuries: Review of Anatomy and Clinical Evaluation.
The structures in the posterolateral corner of the knee, which stabilize the joint, are often involved in injuries to the posterior cruciate ligament. Familiar structures include the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, tibial collateral ligament, and menisci. Less familiar are the structures of the posterolateral corner, the most important of which are the fibular collatera...
